Yukon=20
Women in Music is about to release a new compilation of =
music=20
composed and recorded by a great cross section of Yukon=20
women. The 12 tracks selected for this CD were recorded =
and=20
produced by Lynn Miles. It is a treat to hear tracks, some =
by novice=20
songwriters, given equal time and care in production as some =
of the=20
better known artists on the album. In my opinion, this =
has given=20
the CD a quality of sound and sense of care and =
professionalism that=20
you rarely see on a compilation of diverse acts. Most of =
the=20
songs on the album are of a folk or country derivation: =
songs big on=20
emotion and personal stories of love and devotion. Some =
of the=20
names on the CD you will have heard before. Natalie Edelson opens the album with Let =
It Rain, a=20
song that continues her exploration of relationships in her =
own folk=20
pop style End of the day and I=E2=80=99m doin=E2=80=99 fine =
/ getting through what I=20
can=E2=80=99t get over. Nicole Edwards sings about the =
reality of working=20
class women in a small industrial town in her Widows Waltz =
while=20
Anne-Louise Genest's Spit and Polish swings with an =
olde-timey=20
beat. Other names that will be familiar to Yukoners are =
Kim Beggs=20
and Barbara Chamberlin. Both of these gals have a welcome =
spot in my=20
music collection and, as an added bonus, can melt the frost =
from=20
your windshield with their voices. BJ MacLean and Peggy =
Hanifan=20
both contribute songs that reflect their own particular =
romantic=20
style. Grandfather, a song that expresses a love and =
respect of=20
elders, written by Nicole Smith, has a distinctive native =
flavour=20
using interesting electronics and percussion in place of =
more=20
established timbres. The title track of the CD, Tether =
Hooks and=20
Velcro, sung by Lara Lewis, is a fine piece of work with a =
good=20
chorus and great overall sway factor. Heart of a Pirate =
and=20
Sister's Song by Kayla Dewdney and Asheya Hennessey, =
respectively,=20
are great examples of song writing by talented first timers. =
Dewdney's song has a sultry warm movement to it while =
Hennessey's=20
song, which closes the CD, is an anthem of personal =
affirmation to=20
one=E2=80=99s self with a very lovely voice behind =
them. They don=E2=80=99t call=20
them truisms for nothing. The one song that sticks out in =
my=20
ears, and I don=E2=80=99t mean this as any sort of negative =
comment, quite=20
the contrary, is Mother Ship by Angel Hall. You will have to =
hear it=20
to believe it. I can=E2=80=99t get it out of my =
head. Kudos to all of=20
those involved in the whole process of putting this =
compilation=20
together. Doesn=E2=80=99t this, afterall, show you what can =
be accomplished=20
with a little community organizing? There will be a CD =
release=20
concert for Tether Hooks and Velcro at the Yukon Arts =
Centre, here=20
in Whitehorse, on Sunday, Nov. 21. After their first tour =
to=20
Haines Junction and Burwash Landing last week, they now head =
to=20
Carmacks Nov. 26, Pelly Crossing Nov. 27, Mayo Nov. 28 and =
Dawson=20
City on Nov. 29. YWIM has a MySpace page at =
www.myspace.com/ywim=20
and a website at www.ywim.ca. And you can learn more =
about the=20
behind-the-scenes happenings by reading the story on Page =
2. Now,=20
if you will excuse me, song has swept over me once again ... =
