As=20
I start this article, I should reveal to you that this CD is =
not for=20
the weak. There is much reference to making merry, =
but at this=20
time of the season, you must admit, a little revelry is =
called=20
for. The Whiskeydicks have a new CD out called =
Get=E2=80=99er Done! and=20
they have an agenda. They are out to create the bacchanalia =
with=20
every performance. In essence, they are a party band, =
with the=20
ability to move a crowd lyrically, often using references to =
alcohol=20
and its effects and its aftermath to tell a good =
tale. More=20
importantly, they have the talent to pull off different =
styles of=20
music, sometimes within the same song. Stylistically they =
range=20
the canon of 20th century music, submersed and suffused in =
punk.=20
Anarchy may spew from the beer-soaked lyrics, but the music =
is=20
always spot on. Witness, if you will, the song Nowhere =
Fast.=20
Within this gem is a break of the classic rock hit Smoke on =
the=20
Water and the standby standard Caravan. Combined in this =
moment=20
of well-executed madness, in a twisted gypsy metal mash up =
sort of=20
way, is the nub of The Whiskeydicks strength and the mark of =
good=20
band repartee: the ability to change gears mid-tune while =
playing=20
with great effect and verve. Whereas some bands might =
sample a=20
tune electronically and place it in the context of the song =
as an=20
element, The Whiskeydicks apply their musical abilities to =
the same=20
idea and play the interpretation live as a cultural =
reference within=20
the performance. Ryan Enns (guitar and vocals), Patrick =
Ernst=20
(fiddle) and Curtis Ernst (cello and bass) are all =
Whitehorse=20
expatriates. Mike Bell (drums and accordion) from Prince =
Rupert and=20
Zoe Robertson (second fiddle) from Vancouver round out the =
group=20
musically as well as geographically. In Cat Harsis, they =
take a=20
kick at The Cat Came Back and finally rid the world of that=20
monstrous feline. Tamlynn's Dizzle starts out as a heavy =
metal=20
cello riff and quickly becomes a hip-hop showcase for =
another fine=20
Yukon musician, Reid Parent. The Whiskeydicks will be =
performing=20
five sets over four days with an all-Yukon lineup at the =
Woodford=20
Folk Festival in Queensland, Australia. For these shows, =
Yves=20
Paradis of Nemesis will be joining them on the drums. If =
you=20
happen to find yourself down under over the holidays check =
it out,=20
otherwise stay tuned as they play this neck of the woods a =
couple of=20
times a year. With the holiday season in full effect, =
merriment=20
and parties are sure to ensue. With gatherings, music is =
essential.=20
So if you want to party like it=E2=80=99s 1999 (plus 10) =
check out this=20
album and pour me a tall cool one. They have a web =
presence at=20
www.myspace.com/thewhiskeydicks. The Whiskeydicks' =
Get=E2=80=99er Done!=20
is available in the Yukon exclusively at Triple J=E2=80=99s=20
Music.
